Propane vs. Electric Patio Heaters: A Comparison. Heat Output: Propane-fueled patio heaters typically deliver higher heat output, with some commercial-grade models providing up to 48,000 BTUs per hour. In contrast, electric heaters usually have a lower maximum output, making them better suited for smaller or more enclosed spaces. Coverage & Portability: Propane heaters efficiently warm larger outdoor areas and are portable, allowing for flexible placement wherever heat is needed. Electric models are often less portable, as they require access to an electrical outlet, and their heating range is generally smaller. Operating Costs: Propane heaters require regular tank replacements and continued fuel purchases, adding to long-term costs. Electric heaters tend to be more economical to operate over time and typically involve lower maintenance requirements. Maintenance: Propane units need periodic checks and fuel monitoring. Electric models usually require minimal maintenance. When choosing a patio heater, weigh your need for heating coverage against the ongoing costs and maintenance requirements of each fuel type.
